Ridge Augmentation Through Jawbone Grafting

When periodontal disease is left untreated long enough, it can deteriorate the bone structure surrounding your roots. Eventually, bone deterioration can cause tooth loss, or the need for tooth extraction, and can negatively affect your candidacy for dental implant placement. After losing a tooth, the bone degradation continues due to the lack of a root to stimulate proper blood flow. Before recommending dental implant surgery, Dr. Everett and Dr. Morgan will thoroughly examine your oral health, including jawbone density. If necessary, you may require jawbone and/or sinus ridge augmentation to create enough bone density to support the implant.

Jawbone/Sinus Ridge Augmentation

Unfortunately, it is common for bone level dimensions to change drastically over time due to periodontal disease, dental trauma, or from one or more missing teeth. Many times proper implant placement is not possible due to the amount of bone resorption.

Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR), or ridge augmentation, describes the process of altering the dimensions of your jawbone using a biocompatible bone graft and barrier membranes to help guide the growth of new bone structure where necessary.
•  Your lower jaw (mandible) is often dense enough that, even if you’ve suffered bone deterioration, a relatively simple bone graft can strengthen it. Using bone from another area of the mouth or body, Dr. Everett and Dr. Morgan can build up the lost structure of your mandible to support a dental implant (or the natural tooth, if it still remains).
•  Your upper jaw (maxilla) is less dense than your mandible, which could cause complications for routine bone grafts and implant placement. To strengthen the maxilla, Dr. Everett and Dr. Morgan can perform a sinus ridge augmentation, which involves accessing the sinus floor above the maxilla, raising it, and filling the space between with a bone graft. The increased mass provides more effective support for a dental implant and restoration.
