When Does An Oral Surgeon Recommend Full Mouth Reconstruction Implant Procedures?

Full Mouth Reconstruction Lubbock, TX

Interested in a full mouth reconstruction with dental implants? Dental implants might be recommended as part of a full mouth reconstruction when the patient has missing teeth. Lost teeth form gaps and they often hinder the ability to speak and chew properly. Missing teeth also lead to bone tissues in the jaw deteriorating as they no longer get the stimulation they need to be healthy.

Additionally, if the teeth are in bad shape, they may begin to decay, which can lead to serious infections throughout the mouth, including the gums. Whether the teeth are already missing or on their way to decay, an oral surgeon may recommend a full mouth reconstruction that includes dental implants.

Dental implants as part of full mouth reconstruction

An oral surgeon might decide to install dental implants during a full mouth reconstruction if the patient is healthy enough for the procedure. Implants are surgically placed in the jaw so the patient needs to be healthy enough to recover from the process. Some health conditions like those that affect the immune system can lead to a longer recovery period or complications.

Patients also need to have enough thickness in their jawbone to hold implants in place. Those who do not have enough bone tissues can add some bulk to their jawbone with bone grafts. The patient should be recovered from bone grafts before proceeding with implants. This can take up to three months depending on how quickly the person heals.

Dental implants serve as a base for dental restorations like crowns, dentures and bridges. The implant fuses with the bone tissues around it, making it as stable as a real tooth's roots. The implant transfers force to the patient's teeth whenever they bite down on something, keeping tissues in the jaw strong and healthy.

The process

The surgical insertion of the implant starts with the oral surgeon administering a shot of a local anesthetic. This is done to numb the area. The oral surgeon will likely need to make an incision into the gums to reach the jawbone.

A tiny hole that is barely big enough to fit the implant is drilled into the patient's jawbone. The implant is placed into the hole until it is held in place by the bone tissues surrounding it. The oral surgeon will close the incision back up so that the implant can fuse with the bone. This process takes around six months for most patients.

Once osseointegration is complete, the incision is reopened and the oral surgeon attaches an abutment. The abutment is a connector that serves as a base for the implant. Sometimes, the final restoration is added at the same time, while other times, the patient may be required to heal even more. Once the restoration has been complete, the full mouth reconstruction process typically comes to an end.

Recovery after the placement of implants lasts about a week for most patients, making it one of the lengthier full mouth reconstruction procedures. Oral surgeons recommend sticking to soft and liquid foods during this period. Patients should refrain from brushing the healing teeth for the first 48 hours after getting implants. This can aggravate the surgical site. Instead, patients should use salt water to rinse their mouths after every meal.
