Periodontal disease affects more than just your gums and teeth. Infected gums can increase the risk of developing gestational diabetes during pregnancy. This makes it essential to monitor and manage your oral health both before and during pregnancy.

Dr. Bicuspid recently highlighted a study published in the journal *Primary Care Diabetes* that underscores the importance of maintaining oral health for individuals who are pregnant or planning to conceive. Effective oral health plans can help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce the likelihood of pregnancy complications.

The study revealed that gum disease increases the risk of developing gestational diabetes, which poses risks for both the mother and baby. Periodontal disease can exacerbate insulin resistance and contribute to inflammation, making gestational diabetes more likely.

Gestational diabetes can lead to long-term health problems, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Researchers analyzed 11 studies involving over 2,000 participants conducted between 2008 and 2022. The findings highlighted a significant link between periodontal disease and the risk of gestational diabetes.

Despite some limitations in the study, researchers emphasized the need for oral health plans for women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Consistent oral care can minimize complications and support overall health during pregnancy.
